New No-Parking Rules Near Pope Elementary:

Keeping Students Safe at Arrival and Dismissal

Families and neighbors who utilize the Angler Cove area of Bridgeland will notice new No Parking signs along Cove Springs Dr next to Pope Elementary School. After receiving some complaints, Harris County Precinct 3 installed new signs to make school arrival and dismissal safer for students. Harris County MUD 419 did not make this change and does not enforce parking; we are sharing this information so residents can plan ahead.

Why this matters for student safety

  • Children are hidden between cars. Young students are short and hard to see. When they step out from between parked or stopped vehicles, approaching drivers may not see them until it is too late.
  • Exiting into traffic. A child who gets out on the street side of a car steps directly into the path of moving vehicles. Federal Safe Routes to School advises against double parking and against dropping children off across the street from a school, which forces them to cross, often mid-block.
  • Sudden stops and double parking. Quick stops in a travel lane can lead to rear-end and sideswipe crashes as other drivers brake or swerve around them.
  • Blocked sightlines. Vehicles lining the street near intersections and driveways block the view of drivers, crossing guards, and children at crossings.
  • Access for buses and emergency vehicles. Clear streets let school buses, fire trucks, and ambulances get through quickly.
  • Car rider lines are designed for this. School drop-off areas are planned so students can exit at the curb, without walking between cars, with staff on hand to help.

What this means for you

  • Consider using Pope’s car rider line.
  • Consider the bus. Please contact the school to change your student transportation plan
  • Don’t block driveways, mailboxes, or crosswalks, even for a moment.
  • Be patient. A few extra minutes in line is worth a safer trip for every child.
